More than two decades ago in the year of 1989 a legend was born. In East New York.
Brooklyn, also known as “Homicide Central,” a new Hip Hop group was in the process of emerging. The group that started in Brooklyn was called “Group Home” which was created by Lil’ Dap. Lil’ Dap’s vocals sound like a cross between the voices of Kool G Rap and Grand Puba; a gritty, distinct flow that he uses to reflect and represent the streets of Brooklyn; never missing key opportunities to demonstrate his consciousness and his aptitude for social criticism. Through street rep and strong connects Group Home debuted on Gangstarr’s second album’s first single “Just to Get a Rep,” a Hip Hop classic from 1989. That album was distributed by EMI and sold more than 400,000 units.
In 1994, the first Group Home single, “Superstar” reached #1 in the US R&B/Hip Hop charts prompting the sales of over 800,000 copies of Group Home’s debut album,“Living
Proof” (Polygram Records/Payday London). Group Home’s “Living Proof” is considered by many to be a classic synthesis of lyrical urban folklore and premium DJ Premier production. Throughout the mid-late nineties Lil’ Dap and Group Home toured with the likes of Cypress Hill and Onyx in many countries including the USA, France, Germany, England, Switzerland, Italy, Finland, Canada, Japan, Norway, Holland, and Sweden. In May of 2000, a second Group Home album entitled “A Tear for the Ghetto” was released on Freeze Records with KTD distribution and sold over 100,000 units. Guru, DJ Premier, Jeru, and The Alchemist all worked on this album, which was not even “worked” by the industry.
Over all of the years Dap has gained all-city recognition in New York, as well as worldwide. After many years Dap decided that it was time to come out with his first ever solo album. The highly anticipated, first solo project that is titled “I-A-Dap,” made its debut in 2008. “It was December 94 when Superstar jumped off and we got a lot of love from real thugs of course,” Dap said on his album. He takes us back to the days when hip hop was underground, the time when the beats and rhymes were all that really mattered. “I-A-Dap,” was produced for the most part by Group Home along with featured production from Agallah and the Alchemist. Guest appearances on the album include Guru from Gangstarr, Infamous Mobb, Large Professor, DJ JS1, DJ Skizz, as well other members of
Group Home.
A short time after the release of “I-A-Dap, Dap suffered a terrible loss. The loss of Guru had a tremendous effect on Dap. Dap now continues to keep the legacy going of one of the greatest MC’s ever known. Aside from being a great MC, Guru is also a very close friend to Dap. In his memory, Dap created a tribute album titled “G.U.R.U.” A number of artists also contributed to the creation of this very special album. Some of the featured artists include Brand Nubian’s own Lord Jamal, DJ Premier and many more.
With his distinct voice and style, along with his edgy way of delivering the music, Dap leaves a definite impression on the ears and mind of all. Lil Dap continues to give it to us raw and uncut, with a no holds barred attitude. After the release of “I-A-Dap,” his long awaited solo debut album, Dap makes his mark in another chapter of hip hop’s history known as the “Golden Age.” Keep your head up and eyes and ears open.
